Camera Sampling Animation Script

Warning: BETA content

This file is marked as "BETA" which means that the contents might be unfinished, outdated or incompatible with the most recent version of Source Filmmaker.

Description

A script to allow editing Depth of Field and Motion Blur sample count over the course of an animation in real time.

Pic 1

Can be used to improve rendering performance for longer shots or films, as well as avoiding a waste of sample count.

Installation

Extract the zip into a mod folder of your choice, such as into game/usermod.

Usage

  • Apply the rig script onto your scene's camera and modify the sliders that were added to the camera animation set.
  • You need to set the Depth of Field and/or Motion Blur sample count (in the Render Settings) to "Use Camera Settings", otherwise the override values will be used instead.
  • It's recommended to either use the Motion Editor for animating the quality sliders, or to use the Graph Editor with "stepped" tangents.

Important

  • Deleting a camera that uses the script (and has the text overlay) may cause crashes or other bad stuff. Don't do it for now - I warned you!
  • The text display will show in your movie render if you don't scale it to zero before starting your render!
  • If you resize the shot after having run the script, you need to run the script again on one camera which uses the script (if the text overlay is enabled). It might cause overlap otherwise.

Changing the sample count during an animation is seamless. Just ensure that, for motion blur, there isn't much movement going on during the change. And when using high radius lights, be sure that your total sample count stays around the same.

If this does what it says on the box, it's good and will help people with their workflows.

Waiting for this to make it out of its beta. Really handy and useful.

Huh, so rather than having a sample count that remains consistent throughout, you can lower or increase it throughout, that's decent.

Nice tool Does this affect screenshots as well?

@YoruichiSama It works exactly like the Render Settings overrides. So it will change in real time not only for movies, but also for poster renders and even for the viewport preview!
