Welp, nvm. I found out about autorigger and that got yang working. Still welcome any information or input anyone has.

Sometimes for some reasons (aka because SFM loves to be a dick) the rig doesn't load properly. Usually you can fix it by renaming the model. For instance, if you load a model of yang, in the session she will appear as yang1, if you right click the name and rename it to, say, yang2, and try to apply the rig again, it should work. If not, remove that model from session and load a new one. If it still does not work, just remove the model, save, close SFM and try to open/load the model again. It should work. The rig_rwby was made with autorigger, so if you create a new one it should behave like the original one

Personally, the moment i see a rig not being applied when I KNOW that i should work, i rename the model, and if it still doesn't work, just remove and reload a new one. Sometimes the model gets "bugged" after failing to apply a rig and it won't accept new rigs even if they're correct, so the only way to fix it is by loading a new model. Unfortunately SFM has some annoying bugs, and this one hits you right at the start sometimes xD

The included rig should indeed work, at least it worked for me, but yeah, SFM has a number of bugs that will probably never get fixed, including not wanting to apply rigs sometimes.

@FinalCartoon, I think that goes away when you render it.

Yinyama posted 3 days, 16 hours ago

@Yinyama enabling lighting actually fixed it. at this point im trying to learn sfm on my own by messing around with stuff, bad idea, i know. (the tutorials where a bit confusing to me)
