The downloads here on sfmlab are broken. Use this link (http://www.mediafire.com/file/g97usiozqtfp3h3/models.zip) for the models and this link (http://www.mediafire.com/file/0zywuo1nxorcryq/materials.zip/file) for the materials. The ground model textures in this here pack are VERY high res, ranging from 6k by 6k to 30k by 4k. What this means is that, not only are the textures on the models extremely sharp, but they can also be scaled up to many times their normal size with no noticable change in quality. They also feature envmap, ao, and a normal map.
This pack features 2 flat ground models, a road model with 3 skins, cliff models, and a ground model with 3d roots.
The flat ground model is one polygon, so you can have thousands and thousands of them in your scene with no lag, making this ideal for base ground in a scenebuild.
The models also feature equally High res normal maps, which, if you don't know, manipulate light to make it look as though the texture is a 3d object. It's best to put a light on the shadows of the ground, just so you don't have this sharp contrast. If you just slap one light on this thing, it might look ugly.
Technically not a bug, just SFM being silly. The model will disappear if its too close to the edge of the screen. This is because of culling, a tactic 3d programs uses to help performance.
Here's the fix: Don't touch root transform, just the root. As long as root transform is in front of the camera, it won't disappear. On top of that, the models are REALLY small, so you're gonna have to scale it quite a bit. With the resolution size, that shouldn't be a problem, but make sure you scale root, not root transform. Like I said, the model will get culled if you increase root transform size.
If you know what you're doing with textures, you can apply these hi res textures on any model you want. I personally put one of the textures on a fallout 3 cliff model. You could put these textures on lordAardvark's ground scenebuild model, since those come with flexes for changing the terrain.
These models do NOT replace scenebuilding. These models look great from up top, but the lower you get to the ground, the more you can tell it's just a flat plane. They are meant to go with a scenebuild, which means you still have to actually put models here and there to make the build more complex. If you just copy and paste a bunch of ground models in, it's going to look flat.
