SzotyMAG, I just downloaded maps with requirement content from the description, extracted the content and then the maps. Everything works fine.

Hmm not sure what I'm doing wrong as I did follow the read me included and still having particles missing and light box outlines showing. Hopefully I can fix it, cause they really are nice looking maps.

Textures I have missing are particles for waves and light and skybox lines appearing when they shouldn't

Never really found much use for these for my own purposes but definitely thanks for the upload. It will be interesting to see what others end up doing with them.

K, did creating steps 1 thu 4. Still having particle system errors with them not able to find them so not producing particle textures. And still on my Esther itself have the particle system errors and skybox oulines highlighted. Using facepunch files fixed missing wather textures for watherfalls. So there does seem to be a few things still missing. Also with my messup of installing these map. My gamemode hud and game mode sounds are all messed up now. Not sure what I did to mess that up. Oh well hopefully I'll figures it out. Just had enough for the moment.

Hello sir... looks like I found something weird... I found some camera white line inside the cave... Perhaps you can check it out sir... I think it's some object that included inside the map...

As I said, don't overwrite maps files with content files. 1) create \sfm\dear_esther 2) extract content in it 3) extract maps in it (overwrite files) 4) launch sfm SDK and activate "dear_esther" in search path

It has nothing to do with the game itself. Put content files in usermod or in a separate folder, then put the maps files in the same folder ;)

Well adding the particles fixed the map. Now hope a verify from Steam will fix other problems not associated with the maps. Still not sure how I messed that up, but lest the map I tried seemed to be working correctly.

The game should be fixed with a "check cache integrity". But that's strange as this release is completely separate from the game itself. Anyway it's nice maps are working now ;)

I put everything in the right place, I did the load order in game_path in usermod folder... I still get; ![Problem]( "Errors")

Hum, I duno then... maybe try to reinstall all the Dear Esther stuff from scratch. Also some people found a solution with putting everything in the usermod folder instead of a separate one.

It's in both > C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\dear_esther and C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\usermod Still yields the same result

@beelzebub Very rude. He basically wants you to "mount" the Dear Esther game directory. This is a common practice for maps from other source games and it is a GOOD THING. Basically what you should know, is that the source engine organizes content into "mod" directories. `C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\` is your game directory, and there are mod directories inside of that. `tf`, `tf_movies` and `usermod` are all mod directory. By default, SFM loads the `usermod`, but it can be configured to load other content. Which additional mods are loaded is defined in `gameinfo.txt`, so you don't have to clutter up your usermod directory. **This is a good practice for organizing content from other games, especially because content between games can be incompatible.** In addition, you can filter by mod in the model picker, which helps to narrow your search and decreases load times in the model picker. It's much better than letting your usermod directory expand to a 50GB mess with content from 15 different games. Again, adding a mod directory is a common thing to do in SFM, and I guess nightboy just assumed most people would've done this before, which is why I assume the instructions nightboy wrote aren't very detailed. If you run into visual errors and materials messing up, I highly recommend just looking at the SFM console to read the error messages and reporting any errors you run into. It's much more helpful than complaining about things you don't understand.

i tried following your (vague) instructions, the map loaded but the particles didn't. i tried extracting everything into the usermod folder like a NORMAL MAP SHOULD, particles still didn't show up. i tried installing your separate particles folder into usermod, STILL DIDN'T WORK! i honestly have no idea because im not installing it wrong, you have it set up to be installed wrong. every other map/file for SFM just has a materials and models/maps folder that you put into the Usermod folder with no issues. but this is telling me to create some new folder (god knows where) and extract some files there and replace some files and i cant even understand it. its not the english, its the vague instructions. " create dear_esther folder in sourcefilmmkaer\game directory" what the hell does that mean? opening game info txt, typing "Game dear_esther before tf_movies" WHO DOWNLOADS A MAP LIKE THIS?! im sorry if im comming across as rude but it iritates me when someone sets up a map or file with confusing and UNNECESSARY installation instructions. and when people say that particles are missing, they just shrug and say that they did it wrong, when its the creator who set the whole thing up wrong in the first place!

i have the particles fixed, but is the map ONLY supposed to be caves? cause thats all i see and there are 2 weird underwater roads and i cant see any land in the map like in the preview picture. i know what the map is supposed to look like. is something wrong?

Well I apologize and agree this isn't very well explained, english is not my native language is certainly one reason. Also I've rewrite instructions from the author of the maps (I didn't make them) but maybe I made them more unclear (even it was already not clear ^^). Also I simply provided the original maps archive, plus an archive for the game content so you don't have to buy the game to use the maps, what the author didn't. I'll have a look to repack all the contents in a single archive, including the particles fix and rewritting instructions so it will be easier for guys that are not familiar with that. But about mounting the content in a separate folder, this still a good thing. You can put everything in usermod but I can't guarantee this is safe way, so take care.

I absolutely love the map. I'm quite new to sfm, so I'm not sure if I don't know how or if it's not possible. But sfm lights don't seem to work on the map. I'm trying to make a sun, but the light can't cover the entire map. Only certain portions. I think I might have to decompile, and I REALLY don't know how to do that. Any help?

[]( This is an accurate physical effect, ...less accurate because it's a (old) game engine. Not sure how to change it but if you want to change this behavior you might have a look here and find which files are concerned by this texture :

No offense, but adding the "dear Esther" to the gameconfig only prevented SFM to load, so I had to revert. Someone needs to make a real guide.

i dont know if its sfm fucking with me or your maps, but whenever i try to render video using your maps, its corrupted... like - the video is supposed to be 1min long but the rendered one is about 5-6 min long for example... And the rendering doesnt take any extra time, so im realy confused. Any help or explanation would be cool , thank you

First off Beautiful map. Secondly to anyone getting particle errors even when you've followed all the steps, I think I've found the cause. If you have different Particle files of the same name already in your usermod then the Dear Esther particles wont load. Take out those Different particle files and reload sfm then they should work! I assume this is because when Usermod is being loaded it puts files in the Usermod folder on Higher priority, thus overriding the particles needed for the map. So long story short, if the map particles aren't working just go in your usermod folder and find out which ones are overriding the ones you need. Sorry for the long explanation but I hope you get the point I'm making.
